Venezuela's easiest Caribbean run if you're short on time and budget. Drive 3.5 hours from Caracas to Chichiriviche, sleep in a small posada, and use the penero co-op to bounce between Cayo Sombrero (postcard), Cayo Borracho (the best reef), and Cayo Sal. Day three is the Cuare Wildlife Refuge — Venezuela's first Ramsar site (1988) — where flamingos and scarlet ibis roost in mangroves. Cheaper than Los Roques and reachable by car. Best Dec–Apr; avoid heavy rain weeks.
Best months: Dec, Jan, Feb, Mar, Jul, Aug, Sep.
