Jorge Castillo Blanco
Jorge Castillo Blanco was born in Maracaibo in 1933 and graduated as an architect from the Universidad Central de Venezuela in 1959. He began his career as an assistant to Carlos Raúl Villanueva and taught architectural design at the UCV until 1975. He also trained at the Escuela de Artes Plásticas in Caracas, and worked across architecture, industrial design and the visual arts.
Colleagues and the press describe his work as inventive and experimental. He treated architecture as a creative act, exploring the language of signs and form, modular structures, and materials such as reinforced concrete, steel and fibreglass. His career was recognised in 1999 with Venezuela’s National Architecture Prize. He died in Caracas in March 2022.
