Ashy-tailed Swift

Rare and exceptionally poorly known — among the least-documented birds in Venezuela, with very few confirmed records/specimens. Identification in the field is extremely difficult; do not 'tick on sight' lightly.

Small, dark Chaetura swift; sooty brown-black with a paler grey-brown rump/uppertail-coverts and ashy-toned tail, slightly paler throat. Field marks overlap heavily with other Chaetura; structure (small size, stubby spine-tipped tail, rapid flight) plus range is all a swift will give you in the field. Often unidentifiable to species without exceptional views.

Aerial over a range of northern/central Venezuelan habitats — river valleys (notably the Orinoco), open country, and forest edge. Roosts and likely nests in hollows/chimneys/cliff fissures as in other Chaetura.

Highly aerial, feeding on flying insects in fast, twisting flocks, often mixed with other swifts and swallows — which is exactly what makes ID so hard. Most observations are of fast-moving flocks overhead.

High, dry chittering/twittering typical of Chaetura swifts, given in flight. Rarely a practical ID tool given how poorly the species is documented. Search Xeno-canto and Macaulay Library for "Ashy-tailed Swift" / "Chaetura andrei" — but expect very few (or no) clean recordings; cross-check with Birds of the World.

Be honest with clients: this is a near-mythical, taxonomically unsettled swift that most Venezuela specialists never confirm. Treat any candidate flock as 'Chaetura sp.' unless photographed well; flag the ID controversy (Sick's/Vaux's) and document with photos and audio rather than claiming a sight tick.
