Black-headed Hemispingus

Uncommon and local; in Venezuela reaches only the extreme southwest (Táchira) at the northern tip of its Andean range (south to N Peru). A reliable-with-effort temperate-zone specialty for high-Andean tours in Táchira.

Distinctively patterned small tanager: black head with a contrasting buffy/whitish central crown stripe, staring pale (whitish) eyes, and a plain gray body. The pale eye on a black head plus the crown stripe make it unmistakable among hemispingus.

Wet temperate-zone montane forest, elfin/stunted cloud forest and shrubby edges, roughly 2,700–3,400 m — i.e. the upper cloud forest near treeline.

In pairs or small flocks foraging through shrubby forest and edges, frequently perching on the tops of bushes; a regular member of mixed-species flocks, so it is often found by working the flock.

High, thin, sibilant tanager chips and a jumbled high-pitched twittering song, typically given by flock members. Reference Venezuelan cuts exist (e.g. El Tamá NP, Táchira ~2,600 m) — study them on Xeno-canto and Macaulay Library under "Black-headed Hemispingus" or "Pseudospingus verticalis".

Work the mixed-species flock — this hemispingus rides with the flock at bush-tops, so once you hit a flock at treeline, scan the bush crowns. Teach clients the combination of pale staring eye + buffy crown stripe on a black head so they can pick it out instantly from the commoner black-capped hemispingus types.
