Black-spotted Piculet

Locally common within its tiny northeastern range but very range-restricted, so a true regional specialty. Often treated taxonomically as a form of Scaled Piculet (P. squamulatus) — split status varies by authority — so confirm which checklist your clients use.

Tiny piculet, ~8-9 cm. Diagnostic underparts: pale, pure YELLOW underparts scattered with sparse, distinct BLACK SPOTS/DOTS on the lower breast, belly and undertail coverts (some SE Sucre birds show fine barring on the chest instead). Olive-brown above, finely scaled/spotted crown (males with orange-red forecrown speckling, females plainer). The bold black spotting on clean yellow below separates it from scaled/barred relatives.

Coastal lowland scrub, bushes and trees in waterlogged or near-water situations, including mangrove edge and gallery growth above the high-tide line. Almost entirely below 100 m.

Active, restless gleaner that creeps and taps along thin twigs, vine tangles and small branches, often low and in the open edge of waterside vegetation. Joins mixed flocks; easy to overlook by size.

Song is a short series of 2 to several extremely high, thin, slightly descending notes — 'tseeet, tseeet, tsee...' — likely doubling as a contact call; birds sing a few times then fall silent for minutes. Also a soft drum. Search Xeno-canto and Macaulay Library for 'Picumnus nigropunctatus' / 'Black-dotted Piculet' (the alternate English name 'Black-dotted Piculet' returns more recordings).

This is a listen-first bird — train your ear (and clients') to the very high thin 'tseet' notes, then track the movement low in waterside scrub. Pairs it naturally with a delta/Paria itinerary out of Tucupita or Caripito. Flag the taxonomy up front so listers know whether they're ticking a full species or a Scaled Piculet form.
