Delta Amacuro Softtail

Very rare and extremely range-restricted — described in 2013, known from only four sites along the Brazo Imataca; range estimated at just ~32-48 km². A logistically demanding, boat-access mega-target; very few birders have seen it.

Medium furnariid, warm rufous-brown softtail with the genus's soft, loose-webbed tail (lacks stiff spines). Best identified by range, habitat (riparian delta forest) and voice — within its tiny range it is effectively the only Thripophaga, so location plus the duetting song are the practical ID.

Mature seasonally flooded floodplain (riparian) forest along streams and channels of the southern Orinoco Delta, with interspersed marsh and seasonally flooded savanna; the area floods roughly May-October. Entirely outside any protected area.

In pairs/family groups in dense riverside vegetation, including on vegetated sandy river islands; pairs duet conspicuously. Forages low to mid-level in tangles; vocal but skulking.

An explosive, duetted set of short notes — a long chattery rattle of short loud notes from one bird, then joined by a second giving harsher, even shorter notes (classic Thripophaga-style duet). Recordings on Xeno-canto (e.g. XC461615, Rosendo Fraga) and Macaulay Library — search 'Thripophaga amacurensis'.

This is an expedition bird: arrange Warao-community boat logistics and a local guide for the Brazo Imataca well in advance, and budget extra days. Find it by ear — let the pair start duetting, then ease the boat in and use brief playback to draw the duet closer. Prep clients that it is a high-effort, low-frequency tick and that area security/permits must be checked before committing.
