Gray-headed Warbler

Rare and very local; a true range-restricted endemic confined to the Turimiquire massif. Hard to find — requires dedicated effort at the right elevation, but vocal and responsive at dawn. A recent status survey detected only ~82 individuals across all known sites; one of the least-known wood-warblers in the Neotropics.

Bright yellow underparts, plain gray head with a very short whitish supercilium, olive-yellow back, and distinctive orange/orange-pink legs. Sexes alike. No crown stripes.

Humid montane cloud forest, forest edge, and adjacent second growth, roughly 1,200-2,440 m. Once thought to need mature undisturbed forest but also uses regenerating second growth.

Forages low in dense understory and forest edge, usually in pairs or family groups; actively gleans foliage for insects. Most detectable by voice in the early morning, when pairs duet.

Loud, melodious, repetitive song of ~five clear notes, e.g. 'we-chee-cHEEw, wee-cHEEw,' frequently delivered as a duet; call a sharp 'chack' and a short trill. Search Xeno-canto and Macaulay Library for 'Basileuterus griseiceps' / 'Gray-headed Warbler' (recordings are scarce — grab any you can in advance).

Treat this as a dawn-only, voice-first target: pre-load a recording, hike into Cerro Negro cloud forest before first light, and listen for the loud duet — birds respond to song but stay in dense cover, so position clients for a clear edge view before playing anything, and use playback sparingly given the species' small population.
