Great Antpitta

Rare and very hard to see; heard far more than seen even where it sings. One of the most sought-after and difficult Venezuelan endemics. Patchily distributed in cloud forest.

Very large antpitta (the genus's biggest, ~25+ cm), plump, long-legged, near-tailless. Olive-brown above, paler buffy-brown below with fine dusky barring/scaling; grayish face. Sheer size and bulk separate it from any sympatric Grallaria — looks heavy and 'thrush-on-stilts' big.

Humid, mossy cloud forest floor and dense understory, ravines and bamboo/treefall tangles; mainly 1,700–2,300 m (locally to ~2,500 m).

Terrestrial, extremely secretive; hops on the forest floor and freezes. Sings most at dawn and dusk and in misty/overcast weather; rarely responds to playback and seldom shows. No habituated worm-feeding stakeouts exist for this species (unlike some Andean Grallaria).

Song a long (4–6 sec), low-pitched, 'rubber-lipped' rolling trill — br'r'r'r'r'r'...r'r'r'ub — with a barely perceptible rise in pitch/tempo and an abrupt ending; also a low hollow 'du-du-du-du'. Voice is the only practical way to locate it. Recordings: search 'Grallaria excelsa' on Xeno-canto and 'Great Antpitta' on the Macaulay Library / Merlin.

Scout the territory the evening before, then be in place pre-dawn. Triangulate on the long low trill, set up a clear sightline along the forest floor, and use minimal, well-spaced playback — this bird walks in silently or not at all, so patience and a steady scope-free ground view win it.
