Hooded Antpitta

Rare and very local in Venezuela, on the eastern edge of a Colombian-centered range; secretive and infrequently recorded. A specialist target requiring effort at the right Andean cloud-forest sites near the Colombian border.

Tiny (~10-12 cm), round, almost tail-less antpitta. Distinctive rufous/orange-rufous hood (head and breast) contrasting with olive-brown upperparts; whitish belly with a small dark malar/throat mark and pale eye-ring giving a 'big-eyed' look; pinkish legs. The clean rufous hood on such a tiny, upright, ground-loving bird is diagnostic among Venezuelan Grallaricula.

Dense understory of humid Andean montane and cloud forest, roughly 1500-2700 m; favors treefall gaps, stream edges, mossy ravines and bamboo/dense low vegetation.

Solitary, terrestrial-to-low-perch forager; sits quietly on low perches and the forest floor making short sallies and hops for invertebrates. Shy and easily overlooked; usually detected first by voice. Largely sedentary on territory.

A high, thin, short whistled note or sharp 'peep', sometimes a short trill, easy to miss against forest background; song is the key to locating it. Recordings: search 'Grallaricula cucullata' on Xeno-canto and Macaulay Library / eBird (Venezuelan cuts are scarce - study Colombian recordings too).

Pre-load the song into your ear and your clients' before the trail; this is an entirely voice-driven find. Use brief, sparing playback at known territories around dawn and watch low perches at the edges of treefall gaps. Pair it logistically with Tachira Antpitta and other El Tama specialties since access is the limiting factor.
