Mérida Sunangel

Locally fairly common within its small Andean range; an easy and reliable endemic at the right elevation around Mérida, frequently coming to flowering edges and feeders. A near-guaranteed tick on a Venezuelan Andes itinerary.

Small (~10–11 cm) sunangel with a straight black bill. Male: glittering violet/amethyst throat (gorget), green forehead and crown, green upperparts, and a clean white neck band/breast crescent below the gorget — the white collar is the key mark. Female: throat mottled buff-and-green, largely lacking iridescence, with whitish underparts; still shows the sunangel shape and pale breast.

Open Andean landscapes between ~2,000 and 3,600 m — shrubby forest edges, openings and clearings within montane forest, brushy pastures, and upper cloud-forest/páramo transition. Prefers semi-open edge over forest interior.

Active, pugnacious little hummer; feeds at low and mid-height flowering shrubs and edge flowers, perches readily on exposed twigs, and visits feeders where available. Defends flower patches. Tolerant of edge and disturbed habitat.

High, thin, dry chip and twittering notes typical of Heliangelus, given from perch and in chases; not a major ID tool but useful for locating perched birds. Search Xeno-canto and Macaulay Library for "Merida Sunangel" / "Heliangelus spencei" (older lists may file it under Amethyst-throated Sunangel).

Work flowering forest-edge shrubs and feeders on the Mérida Andes road system (e.g., La Mucuy / La Carbonera / Páramo edges above the city) at mid-morning. It is one of the easiest Venezuelan endemics — a good confidence-builder and scope subject for the male's violet gorget and white collar.
