Merida Tapaculo

Fairly common and widespread in Andean cloud forest and paramo edge within range; the default Scytalopus of the Venezuelan Andes. Easy to hear, hard to see - typical tapaculo skulker.

Small uniformly dark gray tapaculo with the genus's mouse-like jizz, short cocked tail, and pinkish legs; some birds show brownish flanks/rear. Plumage is non-diagnostic across Andean Scytalopus - identify by voice, elevation, and range rather than plumage.

Undergrowth of humid montane forest, forest edge, and shrubby paramo borders. Nominate mostly 2,200-4,000 m; 'Lara' subspecies lower, ~1,600-3,200 m.

Classic tapaculo - stays in dense low cover, hops on the ground and through tangled bases of vegetation, rarely seen in the open. Sings persistently from inside cover; responds to playback but often circles unseen.

Song starts with a few descending notes then becomes a rising trill - distinctive and the key to separating it from neighboring tapaculos. Heard far more often than seen. Recordings on Xeno-canto and Macaulay Library under 'Scytalopus meridanus' (eBird code mertap1); compare the 'Lara' population separately.

Use this as the 'reference tapaculo' of the Venezuelan Andes - get clients onto its descending-then-trilling song so they can contrast it with Caracas Tapaculo from the coast. Work a roadside singer at a steep cut, keep playback brief, and watch the leaf-litter edge for the split-second view.
