Perija Antpitta

Uncommon to rare and genuinely difficult; very local and restricted to a single isolated massif. A true target species requiring a dedicated Perija expedition. Easier to hear than see; responds best to playback at dawn.

Medium antpitta, 14-15 cm. Buff-brown to olive-brown upperparts, dull whitish underparts with buffy-brown wash on breast sides and flanks. Whitish bases to forecrown feathers, thin/indistinct whitish eyering, brownish ear coverts. Sexes alike. Plain-faced, lacking bold markings - identification is largely by range (no other Grallaria rufula-group bird occurs in Perija).

Floor and understory of humid montane cloud forest, including forest edge and disturbed patches, roughly 2,500-3,250 m.

Terrestrial; hops on the forest floor and low vegetation, hops-and-pauses like other Grallaria. Sings from the ground or low perches at dawn and dusk. Secretive and easily overlooked when silent.

Long song a descending series of about 10-20 even notes, dropping roughly 500 Hz from start to finish; a shorter vocalization is a flat-pitched trill lasting 0.4-0.5 sec. Recordings on Xeno-canto and Macaulay Library under search term 'Grallaria saltuensis' (eBird code rufant6).

Treat this as an expedition-grade endemic. Be at the singing area before dawn, use short bursts of playback ethically and sparingly, and prepare clients for a heard-only outcome - views require patience and luck. Confirm current security/access conditions before committing a route into the Perija.
