Perija Starfrontlet (Golden-bellied Starfrontlet)

Rare and very localized; the hardest of the Perija specialties to see. Restricted to high humid/elfin forest of the Serrania del Perija. Population estimated at only 250-1000 mature individuals. Encountered singly at flowering shrubs; can require multiple visits to high elevations.

Medium-large starfrontlet, ~11 cm including the 3 cm straight black bill. Male: blackish crown, glittering green forehead, small white postocular spot; back grades from greenish-copper to a golden-orange rump; throat/breast glittering green with a small deep-blue throat patch; underparts glittering copper to reddish-gold; tail slightly forked, golden bronzy-green. Female duller: plain green forehead, white-to-buff postocular spot, buff throat with green spots, mottled buff-and-green breast, and cinnamon underparts with a fiery gold belly and coppery-gold vent. The combination of golden-orange rump and golden/coppery belly is diagnostic in range.

Interior and edges of humid montane forest, elfin (dwarf) forest, and higher-elevation open areas with flowering shrubs; ~1,400-3,200 m. In Venezuela essentially confined to the upper slopes of the Serrania del Perija.

Trap-lining hummingbird that feeds at long tubular flowers (e.g. Bomarea, Cavendishia and other ericaceous shrubs) and visits flowering trees along forest edge and gaps; generally solitary, low to mid-height, and unobtrusive; may also pierce flower bases for nectar.

Vocalizations remain essentially undescribed; as of recent years neither Xeno-canto nor the Macaulay Library held confirmed recordings of this taxon. Trainees should search Xeno-canto / Macaulay Library under 'Coeligena consita' (Perija Starfrontlet) and the parent 'Golden-bellied Starfrontlet / Coeligena bonapartei' for comparison of typical Coeligena high, thin tsip/tsit call notes.

Treat this as a multi-day, high-elevation target requiring permits and security/logistics planning in the Perija border zone. Work flowering ericaceous shrubs at forest edge and elfin-forest gaps at dawn; many recent records and photos come from the better-accessed Colombian (Cesar) slope, so manage client expectations on the Venezuelan side.
