Plain-flanked Rail

Rare and very localized; one of the hardest endemics in Venezuela. Known from only ~5-7 coastal mangrove sites; population estimated at just 50-200 mature individuals. More often heard than seen.

Medium-large rail, ~33 cm, with a long slightly decurved brownish bill. Diagnostic in habitat: the ONLY all-brown rail with completely UNBARRED flanks and underparts. Dull gray-brown upperparts with darker feather centers, a whitish loral streak on a gray-brown face, and a whitish throat. Two color morphs coexist at all sites: a pale morph (smoky brown, streaked dusky back) and a dark morph (uniform sooty-brown, unstreaked upperparts).

Coastal mangrove forest and saline lagoons, strongly tied to black mangrove (Avicennia germinans) stands above the high-tide line. Sea level only.

Secretive and skulking; creeps through mangrove root tangles and mud at the water's edge. Far more often detected by voice than seen. Most active and vocal at dawn and dusk.

Vocally near-identical to Mangrove Rail (Rallus longirostris) — a grunting, accelerating series of harsh churring/clattering notes (a 'kek-kek-kek' descending and slowing chatter). Because the two overlap and sound alike, visual confirmation or local knowledge of where Mangrove Rail is absent is critical. Search Xeno-canto and Macaulay Library for 'Rallus wetmorei' / 'Plain-flanked Rail' (recordings are scarce — note the diagnostic problem versus Mangrove Rail).

Treat this as a dawn-listening, voice-led search in black-mangrove channels at Cuare/Morrocoy. Use playback sparingly and ethically on a sensitive, Endangered endemic. Manage client expectations — getting a clean visual (to confirm unbarred flanks vs Mangrove Rail) is the real prize and far from guaranteed.
