Recurve-billed Bushbird

Rare, local and very hard to see; a genuine mega and one of the toughest Neotropical antbirds. Known from few sites; long thought possibly extinct in Venezuela until rediscovery in Sierra de Perijá in 2004. Shared with Colombia (truly a near-endemic), but treated here per the assigned Venezuela-endemic category.

Stocky, short-tailed thamnophilid (~16–17 cm) with a heavy, laterally compressed, upturned (recurved) pale-horn bill — unique and diagnostic. Male blackish-slate gray with a concealed white interscapular patch, black lores/throat/central upper breast, and small black spots on the wing coverts. Female rich rufous. The bizarre bill, used to lever open dead bamboo and stems, is the key mark.

Dense undergrowth, thickets and tangles in foothill/lower montane secondary growth, often with bamboo (Guadua), forest borders, regenerating gaps and overgrown gullies; ~185–1,750 m.

Skulking, low and inside dense bamboo/thicket tangles; pries into dead stems and bamboo internodes for arthropods. Generally solitary or in pairs; does not reliably attend army-ant swarms (one historic 1965 record at a swarm). Detected far more often by voice than seen.

Song a series of clear, ringing, evenly spaced whistled notes; gives sharp scolding/chatter calls when agitated. Voice is the primary detection tool. Recordings: search 'Clytoctantes alixii' on Xeno-canto (39+ recordings) and 'Recurve-billed Bushbird' on the Macaulay Library / Merlin.

Don't rely on visual searching — pre-load Xeno-canto cuts, find a singing male at dawn, and play sparingly to coax it to the thicket edge. Manage client expectations: this is a multi-hour vigil in dense bamboo, not a quick tick.
