Saffron-breasted Redstart

Extremely rare in a birding sense — a true single-massif endemic confined to Cerro Guaiquinima, an isolated, roadless tepui reachable essentially only by helicopter/expedition. Seen by only a tiny handful of birders. Effectively off the standard tour circuit.

Typical whitestart: olive-gray above with a black crown, a white throat and white eyering, and orange-yellow underparts, with a black tail showing white outer rectrices. Constant tail-fanning. The bright orange-yellow ('saffron') breast plus white eyering and throat separate it from yellow-faced congeners.

Humid montane cloud forest and forest edge, roughly 1,200-1,600 m, restricted to the summit and upper slopes of Cerro Guaiquinima in the Paragua/Caroní region of Bolívar.

Active mid-story to canopy insectivore, fans tail and sallies; joins mixed flocks. Behavior typical of the genus.

High, thin, warbled Myioborus song with sharp chip notes (poorly documented given site inaccessibility). Recordings: search 'Saffron-breasted Redstart' or 'Myioborus cardonai' (note alternate names 'Guaiquinima Whitestart/Redstart') on Xeno-canto and Macaulay Library; expect very few cuts.

Realistically an expedition / dedicated-charter bird, not a day-trip target. Manage client expectations: getting to Guaiquinima is the hard part — once on the summit forest edge the whitestart is reasonably findable by song and tail-fanning. Despite the IUCN Least Concern listing, its single-massif range makes it one of Venezuela's most coveted and least-seen endemics.
