Sucre Antpitta

Genuinely scarce and highly localized within two small, threatened massifs in NE Venezuela; population estimated 12,000-54,000 mature individuals and declining. A difficult, range-restricted target; heard-only encounters are common.

Tiny, short-tailed antpitta ~10-11 cm. Nominate: dark slaty-gray crown and nape, dark olive-brown upperparts and tail, slightly browner wings with thin buff primary edges, orange-rufous loral spot and a buffy to buffy-rufous eyering; buffy-ochraceous underparts. The pariae subspecies differs subtly. ID rests heavily on the small isolated range plus the rufous loral spot and bold eyering.

Understory of humid and wet montane (cloud) forest on isolated coastal/NE massifs, generally mid-to-upper elevations of the Turimiquire and Paria highlands.

Typical Grallaricula: an inconspicuous perch-and-wait understory bird, sitting quietly low and dropping to glean prey. Shy, retiring, and easily overlooked unless vocalizing.

Series of soft, evenly pitched short whistled/nasal notes typical of the genus; heard far more than seen. Note ongoing taxonomy/English-name debate (SACC proposal to call it 'Paria Antpitta'). Recordings on Xeno-canto and Macaulay Library under 'Grallaricula cumanensis' (eBird code slcant5) - sample relatively thin, so log any recordings.

This is one of Venezuela's hardest endemics - set client expectations for a brief, hard-won view or a heard bird. Get to the territory pre-dawn, keep playback minimal and ethical given the small population, and document encounters (recordings/photos) as data on a poorly known, declining species.
