Tachira Antpitta

Extremely rare and near-mythical: not recorded between 1956 and its 2016 rediscovery in El Tama NP; population estimated at fewer than ~50 mature individuals. One of the hardest birds in the Neotropics to see; a bucket-list, low-probability target even for expert guides.

Medium-large (~17-18 cm) Grallaria: olive-brown above, with a greyish wash to head/face and pale-streaked underparts on a whitish/buff ground, dark scaling/streaks and a pale throat; long pinkish legs, upright tail-less antpitta posture. Very poorly known in life - ID rests on range (El Tama micro-area), voice, and elimination of the commoner co-occurring Grallaria.

Dense understory of humid montane/cloud forest and forest-edge ravines on Andean slopes, roughly 1800-2300 m, in a tiny area severely threatened by deforestation for coffee and pasture.

Terrestrial and intensely secretive, foraging on the shaded forest floor for invertebrates; almost never seen in the open. Detected essentially only by voice. Sedentary within its minute range.

A series of mellow, evenly spaced low whistled notes typical of Grallaria (first ever recordings obtained at the 2016 rediscovery). Very few recordings exist. Recordings: search 'Grallaria chthonia' on Xeno-canto and Macaulay Library / eBird - the reference cuts are the rediscovery recordings.

Frame this honestly as a near-impossible 'lottery ticket' even for hardcore listers, not a standard tour bird. If attempting, go with local researchers/park guides connected to the Red Siskin Initiative / El Tama work, target the exact rediscovery drainage at dawn, and rely on voice. Avoid heavy playback on a Critically Endangered bird; documentation (sound/photo) is conservation-valuable, so log everything to eBird.
