Tepui Tinamou

Rare and very poorly known; genuinely difficult — almost always heard, not seen. One of the least-studied tinamous and a high-skill target requiring a dawn ascent into mid-elevation tepui forest.

Small, compact Crypturellus tinamou of tepui slope forest. Dark sooty-brown to blackish overall with a paler greyish throat and dusky-rufous wash on flanks/lower belly; barring largely lacking on most of plumage (cleaner than many congeners). Bill and legs dull. Identification on range + voice is far more reliable than plumage, as views are near-impossible.

Dense, wet, mossy subtropical/cloud forest interior on the slopes and lower shoulders of isolated tepuis, roughly 1,350–1,800 m. Strictly a forest-floor bird of leaf litter and dense understory.

Terrestrial, secretive, and shy; walks the dark forest floor and freezes or slips away rather than flushing. Calls most at dawn and dusk and on overcast/misty days. Diet of fallen fruit, seeds and invertebrates. Essentially never seen in the open.

A mournful, pure tremulous whistle typical of Crypturellus — a low, wavering, slightly descending note delivered at dawn/dusk. Learn the call before going; it is the only realistic detection method. Search Xeno-canto and Macaulay Library for "Tepui Tinamou" / "Crypturellus ptaritepui". Note: recordings are scarce — download whatever exists in advance.

Treat this as a 'heard-only voice tick' and set client expectations accordingly. Get clients in position on a tepui-slope trail before dawn, kill all noise, and play the call sparingly. Logistics and permits to reach tepui slopes are the real challenge — book the access first, the bird second.
