Venezuelan Sylph

Rare and genuinely difficult; one of Venezuela's hardest endemics. Very small, fragmented population (possibly as few as ~1,500 mature individuals) in a poorly accessed massif. Expect to work for it; often requires multiple mornings at the right elevation.

Male: dazzling, with a glittering green crown and throat (gorget), green body, and an enormously long, deeply forked, iridescent blue-violet/green streamer tail far exceeding body length. Female: much shorter-tailed, green above, with a whitish/buff throat and underparts spotted/scaled green, cinnamon-tinged below. The streamer tail of the male is the clincher and unlike anything else in NE Venezuela.

Humid montane cloud forest and forest edge of the Turimiquire Massif, roughly 1,000–2,400 m; favors edges, second growth, and flowering shrubs/epiphytes along ridges and clearings.

Forages at flowering shrubs, epiphytes and Inga/melastome blooms at mid-levels and edges; males trapline and perch conspicuously on exposed twigs, dragging the long tail. Often at flowering patches at forest edge in early morning.

High, thin, sibilant tsip and twittering chip series typical of sylphs; no loud song. Search Xeno-canto / Macaulay Library for 'Aglaiocercus berlepschi' or 'Venezuelan Sylph'; recordings are scarce, so compare with congener 'Aglaiocercus' (Long-tailed / Violet-tailed Sylph) to learn the call type.

This is a 'tour-maker' endemic — set client expectations that it can take several pre-dawn-to-mid-morning sessions at flowering edges around Caripe/Cueva del Guácharo. Stake out a productive flowering shrub at forest edge and wait for the male's trapline circuit rather than chasing through the forest interior. Confirm regional security before committing the route.
