White-bearded Helmetcrest

Locally fairly common within its tiny páramo range but globally restricted; easy to find at the right high-elevation sites (Pico El Águila, Pico Espejo) where it sits low on espeletia and feeds at ground level. Wet-season altitudinal movements mean numbers shift up and down the páramo seasonally.

Unmistakable in range. Small, dumpy, dull bronze-green hummingbird of open páramo with a long pointed crest and a striking white pendant 'beard' (gorget streak) bordered green, running down the central throat/breast. White postocular stripe. Frequently perches on ground or low on Espeletia (frailejón) rosettes rather than hovering at flowers; feeds gleaning insects and at low blooms. Females duller, with reduced beard and crest.

Open humid páramo and super-páramo above treeline, roughly 3,000–4,500 m, dominated by Espeletia (frailejón), grass tussocks and low shrubs. Moves to lower páramo/edge in the wet season.

Atypical for a hummingbird: spends much time perched on the ground or on frailejón leaves, walks/hops short distances, forages low for insects and small flowers, and is highly territorial around flowering espeletia. Tame and approachable in the open páramo.

High, thin, insect-like chips and dry rattling/buzzy notes given from a low perch; not a true song. Search Xeno-canto and Macaulay Library for 'Oxypogon lindenii' (or 'White-bearded Helmetcrest'); recordings are limited, so also try the genus term 'Oxypogon'.

Work the open frailejón slopes at Pico El Águila on foot and scan the GROUND and low espeletia leaves, not the flowers — clients expecting a 'flitting hummingbird' routinely walk past a perched helmetcrest sitting in plain view. Early, calm, sunny mornings before the páramo clouds in.
