Small (~10–11 cm) sunangel with a straight black bill. Male: glittering violet/amethyst throat (gorget), green forehead and crown, green upperparts, and a clean white neck band/breast crescent below the gorget — the white collar is the key mark. Female: throat mottled buff-and-green, largely lacking iridescence, with whitish underparts; still shows the sunangel shape and pale breast.

Open Andean landscapes between ~2,000 and 3,600 m — shrubby forest edges, openings and clearings within montane forest, brushy pastures, and upper cloud-forest/páramo transition. Prefers semi-open edge over forest interior.

Work flowering forest-edge shrubs and feeders on the Mérida Andes road system (e.g., La Mucuy / La Carbonera / Páramo edges above the city) en el mid-morning. It is one de the easiest Venezuelan endemics — a good confidence-builder and scope subject for the male's violet gorget and white collar.
