The Diablos Danzantes de Yare are one of Venezuela’s most striking living rituals. On the movable feast of Corpus Christi, brotherhoods of dancers don fearsome red masks and costumes, dance backwards through the streets of San Francisco de Yare, and finally kneel before the Blessed Sacrament — a public enactment of evil submitting to good.
The tradition stretches back centuries and is passed through hereditary confraternities. UNESCO inscribed the Dancing Devils of Corpus Christi of Venezuela on its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
