Mérida & the Andes

Settle into a colonial posada in the centro, then let the first afternoon stay unhurried on purpose. The altitude asks for it, and so does the city.

Drift through Plaza Bolívar and the Mercado Principal for arepas andinas and aged Andean cheese, then climb to a mirador above the rooftops as the light goes long and gold over the cordillera.

First cabin up the Mukumbarí, four stages climbing to Pico Espejo at 15,600 feet. The early window is the whole strategy: you are above the weather before it arrives, with the Sierra Nevada laid out clean and silent.

Down by midday, before the cloud closes the upper stations. The afternoon is for coca tea, a slow valley walk, and letting the body catch up to the elevation it just visited.

Drive the high route toward Pico El Águila, through frailejón fields, the silver, fuzzy-leaved plants that only grow in this sky-island ecosystem and almost nowhere else.

A walk out to Laguna Mucubají, glacial and still, then trout cooked in a roadside páramo kitchen where the windows fog and the coffee never stops.

Down into the warmer folds of the range to Jají and the white-walled mountain pueblos: plazas, balconies, and the unhurried rhythm the rest of the trip has been teaching you.

A working coffee finca for the afternoon: the picking, the drying patio, and a cupping table that reframes what you thought Venezuelan coffee was.

A slow market morning, one last Andean coffee, and the transfer down. You leave a little reset, which was the entire idea.
