Red-banded Fruiteater

Uncommon, low-density and genuinely difficult to locate; a 'mega' target. It sits quietly in mossy mid-levels and seldom vocalizes, so many trips dip on it. Worth budgeting dedicated time at altitude.

Unmistakable — the most distinctive Pipreola (~16.5–17.5 cm). MALE: dark grayish-green head with a tawny-buff forehead, supercilium and cheeks; rufous-brown wings and tail; a striking RED crescent/band across the upper breast; red-orange iris, red bill and legs. FEMALE: duller, greenish above with a paler buff supercilium, underparts yellowish-white boldly streaked blackish from chin to belly; yellowish iris. The red breast-band on the male and heavy ventral streaking on the female are diagnostic.

Humid and wet montane/cloud forest, especially dense, moss- and epiphyte-laden forest with a Melastomataceae understory; ~1300–2100 m in Bolívar, up to ~1800–2250 m on Roraima.

Sluggish and inconspicuous; forages singly or in pairs at lower to mid levels, sitting motionless for long spells and taking small fruits (a quiet frugivore, easy to overlook). Year-round resident.

Seldom vocalizes; a very high, thin trill almost like a hiss, ~2–3 seconds, falling then rising, given at long intervals, plus excited high peeping contact notes. The thin near-ultrasonic whistle is hard for some ears — train clients to listen high. Slow down and scan — this is a sit-and-wait bird, so the technique is to work the mossy mid-story methodically and look for a motionless chunky cotinga, not to chase movement. Have clients pre-listen to the thin hiss-trill (many people's ears struggle with it) and put a scope on any candidate to nail the male's red band or the female's streaking. Manage expectations: even on a clean tepui itinerary it's a low-percentage, high-reward bird.
