Uncommon, erratic and easily overlooked; one of the trickier Pantepui parrots to connect with. Often only heard as high, twittering flocks passing over. A genuine target bird — finding perched ones is a highlight and not guaranteed on a short visit.
Field marks
Tiny, almost uniform bright/light green parrotlet with a very short, square-ended tail and a small pale bill. Plain-faced look with a subtle yellow wash on forehead, lores, chin and around the eye (most obvious below the eye); underparts yellowish-green. No bold patches — its small size, stubby tail and overall plainness are the marks.
Habitat
Humid lowland-to-montane and cloud forest and forest edge on tepui slopes; ranges widely, roughly 750–2,200 m.
Behavior
Gregarious; flies fast in compact, twittering flocks high over forest, descending to feed quietly in fruiting/flowering trees and at moss/epiphyte clumps. Inconspicuous when perched due to small size and cryptic green plumage.
Voice
High, thin, metallic chattering and twittering 'tsi-tsi-tsi' notes given rapidly in flight — higher and more tinkling than Pyrrhura. Recordings: search 'Nannopsittaca panychlora' or 'Tepui Parrotlet' on Xeno-canto and the Macaulay Library.
Fiery-shouldered Parakeet — much larger, long-tailed, with fiery wing-bend; parrotlet is tiny and short-tailed
Green-rumped Parrotlet (Forpus) — lower-elevation/open country, different range and shape; Tepui Parrotlet is a forest-canopy tepui bird
Distant swifts/small parrots in flight — separate by the metallic twitter and small, fast-flapping silhouette
Guide note
Train clients to bird with their ears here — you'll almost always hear the high metallic twitter before you see anything. Stake out flowering/fruiting canopy trees and moss-laden branches at mid-elevation on the Escalera and be ready to scope fast; perched birds vanish into the green.
