Tepui Wren

Locally common on the higher tepuis where it occurs, but those summits are remote and hard to reach. Common and easy on Mount Roraima's lower flanks; genuinely accessible to few birders because of the climb. A Pantepui specialty rather than a knock-it-out-on-the-roadside bird.

Small, warm rufous-brown wren with a buffy supercilium (eyebrow) and, at close range, fine black barring on wings and tail. Pale buffy throat. The strongly rufous tone plus buffy brow are key. Cocked tail and skulking wren posture.

Mossy/elfin (stunted) forest understory and shrubby summit growth on tepuis, mostly 1,600-2,400 m (recorded 1,000-2,800 m). A bird of the table-mountain cloud zone.

Skulks in dense mossy undergrowth and can be hard to see, but will mount an exposed perch to sing, especially early morning. Often in pairs; responds to pishing/playback.

A high, metallic pair of notes slurred together (second note lower), repeated and sometimes extended into a tinkling, jumbled musical series — far richer than the buzzy call. Recordings: search 'Tepui Wren' or 'Troglodytes rufulus' on Xeno-canto and Macaulay Library.

On Roraima, target the mossy woodland on the lower flanks during the trek up — it is one of the easier tepui endemics there. Use song first, then short playback or pishing to draw it onto an open perch for the clients. Note for the curriculum: although you've filed it as a Venezuela endemic, it is technically a near-endemic Pantepui species that just crosses into Brazil and Guyana on the Roraima massif.
